Installation by Leela Shanker for the New Museum’s NEW INC Creative Science Showcase 2023

Pier 17 Riverdeck, The Seaport, New York NY

June 16 - July 2, 2023

Quorum

Can a living infrastructure of light provide new vocational paths with an emergent  generation of photonic cultivators harvesting light and a culture of care?

Soon

Child of Sun and Moon - Soon is a temporal work as gradual in rhythm as the gradient of the endlessly disappearing-reappearing volume of space it inhabits.

Paper Menagerie

In partnership with TANTHEM for La Nuit de L’art 2021 New York edition.

Every act of communication is a miracle of translation - "The Paper Menagerie"

Featuring live poetry reading "Conversing in Light” by the local artist Graziella Maria Micklovic. The interactive installation of light and paper, which had elements of a piece of poetry printed on them for the audience to take, and as the audience interacts with the sculptural, the form metamorphoses as the night goes on. Transforming the East Village streetscape after dark.

E7

Transforming a slice of East 7th Street in the East Village into the site for flash-mob performance through light, music and dance.

In the void between two temporary restaurant shacks, a parking space formerly stacked with garbage is cleared, cleaned and staged allowing site-responsive moves to collect and redirect borrowed light to hold centerstage for acoustic guitar and street dance.

OPEN

For those who remain: OPEN

This was an invitation to move. To take a night walk of the neighborhood with a series of temporary light art installations occupying a selection of East Village storefronts.

The installation offered fresh interpretations of 8 sites in the East Village from September 12-20, 2020.

ARECIBO

In partnership with the New York Public Library’s Fourth Annual East Village Arts Festival.

Bringing constellations of light to fill Tompkins Square Library, this was a celebration of the discoveries that lie within the walls of libraries as they do the covers of books. Inspired by scientists, artists, and all those who question.

Lead Light

The stained-glass stories of today pursue us from every angle of urban street scapes through the imagery and copy of advertising. This intervention quiets the commercial messaging of video-enabled bus shelters, by a mask of apertures that reduce the highly curated content behind to simple colour and light, allowing the passer-by to exercise their own story without the prescriptive calls of marketed desires.

News

An experiment with New Yorkers’ over-developed sense of peripheral vision and threshold points of perception, this guerrilla installation animated newspaper boxes on multiple corners of New York City streets; teasing the attention of passers by; allowing the otherwise overlooked holder of news to tell its own.

Net Effect

At 3am, light is the only companion of the 24-hour street vendor. With others casting sleep, the former netting of fresh fruit holds softer conversation with the city.
