Mud Spot
From Yasmina Palumbo and James Armata of MUD
What made you OPEN this space?
After starting the Mudtruck in 2000, which was parked at Astor Place for over a decade, Greg and Nina wanted to open something they could lay down roots in. The Mudspot grew out of that desire to build a stable and communal place, separate from the energy and ever changing demands of street life.
What made you OPEN to our concept?
During this incredibly dark time in NYC we were and are honestly open to anything! This is perhaps one of the silver linings coming out of all of this, an openness and opportunity to see things differently. There were many months where the city felt abandoned, we were one of a handful of stores to remain open throughout and we watched things close one by one. It was heartbreaking. To see any signs of life starting up is very inspiring and reassuring. It's also so important to acknowledge the empty store fronts. The idea of using light feels that much more right. People may be cynical in thinking of these storefronts as failed capitalism, but each one has a history and plays a vital role in creating and sustaining vibrant communities.
What do you wish would OPEN next door?
We would welcome anything independent and creative! Gallery, Bakery, Wine Shop, Bookstore, please anything!
